PostSubject: Legion's Game Reviews   Wed Nov 10, 2010 11:10 pm

We've been somewhat less active on the forums (Could ya' notice? Naw.), and this has been for a good reason. We (Being Legion and roommates!) recently picked up three of the more anticipated titles of the year, and we're bored and want to spread basically some mixed opinions. These reviews will not only be us, but our roommates will give their input as well, as they've also played through the games.

These reviews will have huge spoilers, and the story in total. You've been warned, don't come bitching.

Without further adeiou...

Fallout: New Vegas

Fallout: New Vegas is a role-playing first person survival game created by Obsidian Entertainment, who had a large hand in bringing you other great role-playing games, such as The Elder Scrolls series. This game features many differences from Fallout 3, including modifiable weapons, new factions, a new area, a new story, but it's held down at it's core by having essentially the same graphics and, much like it's predecessor, is riddled with game breaking bugs, everywhere. Even then, it's a fantastic game and we recommend it.

Story Synopsis

You're a [fe]male courier in the pseudo-futuristic Las Vegas area. America and the Japanese were at war, and, as far as we know, both countries were bombed to absolute hell by atomic warfare, and many animals have mutated into freaks, and the terrain is completely destroyed, and all that stands before you is the sandy wasteland.

Welcome to the Mojave Wasteland. Your quest begins with you having the job to deliver a mysterious Platinum Chip to a mysterious person. That's not on your mind, though, as you lay there, hands tied, with Benny, one of the Ring Men of the New Vegas Strip, one of the only areas untouched by the war (Viva las Vegas!), pointing the barrel of a nine-millimeter pistol. As you hear him tell you how the game was rigged from the start and as you take a bullet in your brain, you're probably liking the look of Benny's pistol. Not important.

A robot named Victor finds you there, in an unmarked, uncovered grave, and hauls your sorry-ass to Doctor Mitchell, the doctor of the small settlement of Goodsprings. He manages to save you, and whisks you off to find the people who tried to kill you. This gives you the first true feelings of confusion; you start the game and take a bullet to the face, now you're looking for the Platinum Chip and the dude who shot you. As you talk to the settlers in Goodsprings, you learn that Benny may have gone to the settlement of Primm, so that's where you're off to.

You arrive in Primm, to find that the town has been taken over by a gang of outlaws called the Powder Gangers. You also meet the NCR, the New California Republic. They're one of the factions in the game (See Factions & Morality section for details). They inform you of the status of the town. Anyways, your goal is to rescue the deputy of the town who's been taken captive by the gang. Once you clear out the gang, the deputy will tell you to try the settlement of Nipton. More walking.

You arrive in Nipton. Nice place, what with the houses and the fire and the crucified remains of the town-folk. Wait, what the fuck? As you walk toward the town hall, you meet Caesar's Legion (Another faction; see Factions & Morality). They have crucified the people of the town in the name of the great Caesar, and ask that you spread the word of Caesar to the NCR (Optional quest; nothing rewarded). Being that this settlement is fucked up and depressing, you decide it'd be in your best interest to go to Novac, another town which you know about suddenly because you have spidey senses.

In Novac, you'll meet a man named Manny Vargas. If you help him eliminate the ghoul infestation near Novac, or hack his computer, you'll learn that one of the leaders of the Great Khan (Another faction; you know what to do) who was there when you were shot is holed up in Boulder City, in a gunfight with the NCR. You're luckily able to waltz up and talk to the commanding officer of the NCR and the Great Khans and work out a peace deal. Or you can be a dick, and kill all the Khans. Either way, time for you to hit the strip and go to Vegas! Sweet.
Spoiler:

This is where you make your choice; will you help Caesar's Legion rule Vegas, the NCR, help out Mr. House, or kill of the competition and put Vegas in your hands. For simplicities sake, we'll do all of them.

A) Caesar's Legion
- Confront Benny peacefully. He will attempt to kill you and run away, and later be captured by the Legion.
B) NCR/Mr. House
- Kill the hell out of that dick and take the Platinum Chip
C) Vegas is Yours
- Kill Benny, talk to Yes Man, Benny's personal robotic assistant.

Now that Benny's out of the way for three of those (Caesar's Legion will make you do about 2-3 more quests which we wont go into detail about), it's time to finish it up, no turning back now.

A) Caesar's Legion
- Do Caesar's missions, choose to destroy Benny's bunker full of robots, instead of upgrading them.
B) NCR/Mr. House
- Go to the bunker with the Platinum Chip, and upgrade the robots.
C) Vegas is Yours
- Same as above (You can use the robots in the future to help you take out everyone else)
Now..
A) Caesar's Legion/NCR/Mr. House/Vegas is Yours
- Gain support of smaller factions (Brotherhood of Steel, Great Khans, White Glove Society, Boomers, etc)

All of them are the same; can you guess why? Well...now it all comes to fruition. If you're siding with Mr. House/ the NCR, your mission will be to protect the Hoover Dam, the only thing with fresh water, from falling to the legion. Alternatively, Help the Legion take it. Alternatively alternatively, kill EVERYTHING and take the Dam. Game over. Whoosh!

Morality & Factions

This game has quite possibly the best morality system we've seen. No longer is it a bland good/bad choice. When reading this, you probably thought "Huh. NCR is good, Caesar's Legion is bad. Easy!" right? Wrong. All of the factions are actually in a morally gray area, which we particularly enjoyed. No one faction is good, and no one faction is bad.

Caesar's Legion

A bunch of fucking insane guys who prefer to cut you up with a machete. Their goal is to unite Vegas under their rule and crucify the rest. While that's bad, if you help them in the end, it will explain how, after pushing the NCR out, they rule peacefully, and the Mojave Wasteland actually flourishes under their rule. Peaceful murderers.

New California Republic

A bunch of lawmen. Don't mistake it though; they'll gladly kill you if they think you may even be a threat. They want to unite the Wasteland under a Martial Law. Not sure if you know what a military controlled nation is, but it's not fun for anybody. Painful rule under a peaceful people?

Smaller Factions
To keep it brief:
- Great Khans: Somewhat mysterious gang; helping them will result in them actually leaving one they figure out their past. Not much to say.
- Powder Gangers: Someone thought giving people dynamite on the chain-gang would be a good idea so they could clear hills. Way to go NCR, you just gave insane prisoners explosives. They will attack you on sight all the time.
- Brotherhood of Steel: Once a strong group, now a small group trying to fend off the NCr; they believe they should have all technology, and will kill for it.
- White Glove Society: Cannibals. Need we say more?

More to be added; maybe.

If you want to, by all means. We'd appreciate it; we all finished the game already, we all just need to sit down and discuss. Roommate are too tuckered out from talking about New Vegas for three hours trying to remember everything and formulate an opinion.

Taxing everyone <3
